About the event
Are you a girl aged between ages 6 and 17, and are you interested in science and technology?
On Saturday, 5 October 2019, with the support of HEPIA, the associations RightsTech Women, CERN Micro Club, CERN Women in Technology and Informasciences will offer workshops to familiarise girls in the Geneva area with new technologies. The workshops will take place at HEPIA as part of CodeWeek.eu and will provide the participants with further opportunities for discovering more science and technology.
We’ve prepared workshops for girls in two age groups (6-9 and 10-17). Participants may choose a morning or an afternoon session for their age group. Girls aged 10-17 can also do one workshop in the morning and a different one in the afternoon. No equipment is needed, and absolute beginners are welcomed in both age groups. The event is free to participants.
At 9 a.m., all the morning workshops will be preceded by the meeting with Mr. Ambassador Walter Stevens, Head of the Delegation of the European Union to the UN and other international organisations in Geneva that supports the event.
Here are the activities we’re preparing.
Activity: Introduction to Computing
Ages: 6 – 9
Mentored by: CERN Women in Technology
What is a computer? What is programming? These workshops will introduce girls to some of the most fundamental concepts. We will be using pens and paper; all you need to bring is your creativity and curiosity! Our mentors from CERN’s Women in Technology Community will lead the group for this hour-long workshop.
Activity: The Right to Education
Ages: 10 – 17
Mentored by: RightsTech Women
A fun, interactive introduction to human rights relevant to girls’ science education, featuring some famous women in science and technology. You will get a short introduction to the human right to education before moving on to learn Poppy Ergo Jr or hepiaLight.
Activity: Poppy Ergo Jr
Ages: 10 – 17
Mentored by: CERN MicroClub and RightsTech Women
Poppy Ergo Jr. is a robot accessible to everyone, no need to have already programmed in order to learn how to use it. You can see some examples here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXHeD8XeZTc.
Activity: hepiaLight
Ages: 10 – 17
Mentored by: HEPIA and Informasciences
hepiaLight is a programmable electronic card for introducing everyone to embedded systems programming in a playful way. It consists of an LED display matrix, four capacitive touch buttons and accelerometers through which programs and users can interact. More info: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vIel90wXD-E

Practical information
- Date: Saturday, 5 October 2019
- Place: HEPIA, 4th and 5th floors, 4 rue de la Prairie, 1202 Geneva, Switzerland

- The meeting point and welcome for participants will be at the HEPIA’s reception desk, just inside the main entrance (4, rue de la Prairie).
- No need for a computer, all is made available on-site, but girls ages 10-17 can bring a laptop if you have one.
- For any older girls staying all day, there will be a lunch break from 12:30-13:30.
- Participants must be accompanied by an adult during the whole workshop.
- Parents will be asked to sign a form on-site, indicating permission or not for use of their child’s image.
